Summer Hats

Summer Hats - Me Wearing a Straw Cowboy Hat

As the sun gets stronger and summer approaches, it’s time for hats. The two best ways to protect our faces are with sunscreen and a hat. Not only will summer hats protect our skin, they can add a little fun to an outfit.

I’ve done a little “window shopping” and found some hats that I think will be great for late spring and summer.

Style with Sun Protection

If I am in the sun for any length of time a hat is a must. While I often wear one of my trusty cloth hats (shown later in this post), sometimes I want a hat that will dress up an outfit.

This hat has SPF 50 sun protection, with a wide brim that turns down a little for an attractive shape and more sun protection.

Hats with a Tie

I have an old hat that I wear at the beach. It protects my entire face and neck. I’ve had it for years and it’s a bit tired, but has lots of life left. It’s a true sun-protection work horse. It’s from Coolibar, a company dedicated to sun-protection products. My one complaint about my hat is that on a windy day, I have to hold it on my head to keep it from flying away. I need a DIY solution to add a tie to my hat or I need to invest in a hat that has straps that will secure it in place.

I like the wide brim and full coverage of this SPF 50 hat, with the added benefit of a generous grosgrain ribbon strap.

It looks like this hat sold out. Here’s another wide-brim hat with a tie.

Here’s another SPF 50 hat from Coolibar that has a wide brim and a drawstring tie. This lightweight hat has a shapeable brim.

I like that you can hand wash it and hang it up to dry. It comes in a few color combinations.

Packable Hats

Sometimes you need to throw your hat in your luggage for a trip or your purse for an afternoon outing. There are hats that are perfect for the job!

Scala Cotton Hat

This is my number one go-to hat. I have this cotton hat in several colors. When traveling I usually pack the black one, because it works well with all of my clothes, but the linen version goes well with everything too. I like that I can roll it up and throw it in my luggage or my tote and I don’t have to worry about it getting damaged.

It may not be the most elegant or stylish of hats, but it looks good while covering my face and it is easy to wear with most clothes. It works with shorts or a summer dress. It is washable, packable and inexpensive. Also, cotton breathes so well.

I fold the brim down to get more coverage during peak sun hours.

Here I am wearing my well-worn version of this hat:

I have my eye on this packable straw hat. I like the clay color and rose band. It’s a nice alternative to my typical natural straw and black band choice, which this hat also comes in. There is a natural straw and black band version too.

This SPF 50 hat, made from tightly woven grosgrain ribbon is packable and has a drawstring tie. You can roll it up in your luggage and reshape it when you unpack. It’s lightweight and breathable. As one reviewer said, it can go from hiking and boating to casual evening wear.

The hat comes in several colors.
