It’s the weekend!

It's the weekend! Number 310, Creek and Marshes in Menemsha on Martha's Vineyard

I’m  harvesting squash and pumpkins this weekend, before the squirrels take too many bites out of them. With more rain coming, I’ll be looking for dry spells to get garden work done.

Enjoy your autumn weekend!

I recently read a post by Lisa Rubisch (Cup of Jo) about the power of a song to bring her back to her romantic or sexual encounters. Music sure can bring back memories and feelings.

I hear Elton John’s Rocket Man and I’m back to the 1970s, hanging out with my best friend, Mary, at the local beach in Gloucester, MA. We’re belting out the song. We’re talking about boys, what we’re going to do with our lives, the places that we’ll go. Our lives were ahead of us and we had big dreams. The future was endless.

Any song from Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors album takes me back to a summer in the late 70s. It was my last year in the Army and I was starting to think about moving back to California and going to college. There were so many great possibilities ahead.

Joan Armatrading’s Love and Affection was our favorite song in the early 80s when I fell in love with my husband. Tom and I danced to it often.

Jump ahead to the 90s. Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing (Chris Isaak) has me on Martha’s Vineyard, our new baby on a quilt on our deck. My good friend, Kim, is visiting from CA and we sing along every time WMVY plays the song. We laugh and dance baby Louis around the room. The future looks mighty bright when you have a sweet child to escort through the years.

This summer, WMVY played You Do You (Andy Frasco & The U.N.) all of the time. Tom and I danced to it a few times, celebrating the lyrics supporting choice and freedom. It’s a scary time, but we still have hope. Our son is grown and we need to hope that the future offers great possibilities.

Here’s what I have to share this weekend.
