Winter at Arlington Reservoir

A couple of weeks ago we walked around the Arlington Reservoir. The reservoir was sparkling in the sun and the trees were alive with birds.

The town of Arlington updated the path around the reservoir, smoothing and widening it, adding new plantings and benches on which to rest and watch the world go by. It’s a wonderful place for a stroll.

The Arlington Reservoir (known as “the Res” to locals) consists of about 65 acres of property. The reservoir is a town water supply. There is also a swimming area and a mile-long path.

Swirls of ice and wind-swept snow decorated the water.

Snow crunched underfoot in places where trees blocked the sun from the path, but the sun was strong and the walkway was mostly clear.

Rocks and branches were strewn on the shore.

The afternoon sun descended behind the trees, casting their shadows on the snow-covered frozen reservoir.

From a new viewing station, we could look across the reservoir and see a local farm…

and a footbridge that we would cross later.

Near the end of our route, Red-winged blackbirds, just back from their Southern winter locations, called to each other.

The sun was lighting up the marsh grasses that the birds love so much.

It was a beautiful day on the Arlington Reservoir. If you live nearby, I recommend a visit.
