The Best Basic Guacamole

Guacamole is delicious in so many ways, from guacamole with fruit to celebrate the winter holidays, to guacamole with chipotle (smoky goodness) or guacamole with a favorite salsa stirred into it. With all of the great guacamole options out there, you still need a basic, easy-to-make guacamole recipe that you throw together in a few minutes and that everyone will love. Here’s the best basic guacamole recipe (IMHO).

Not only will this recipe satisfy you just as it is (in fact, it may be my favorite with all of its cilantro limeyness), you can treat this as a foundation for other versions. Add to it willy nilly — your favorite hot peppers, chopped onions, chopped tomatoes, chopped peaches, adobo seasoning, Indian or Middle Eastern spices. Do what makes you happy.

Tips

  • Adjust lime and salt amounts to your preferences. I like extra lime.
  • Avocados oxidize very quickly and the surface of the guacamole will darken soon after you make it. If you make this in advance, pour a small amount of lime juice over the surface and/or cover the guacamole with plastic wrap touching the surface. This helps keep the guacamole bright green. (There’s a little lime juice on the surface of the guacamole in my photo to keep the guacamole from darkening as I took photos.)
  • Guacamole tastes best at room temperature. Make this just before serving to avoid having to refrigerate it.

Ingredients

  • 2 ripe avocados
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice (or more if you like lime) Have a little extra on hand if the guacamole is going to sit before you serve it
  • 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro
  • Ground black pepper to taste

Directions

Cut the avocados, remove the pits and scoop the fruit into a bowl. Use a fork to mash the avocado. It doesn’t need to be thoroughly pureed. It blends more as you mix in the other ingredients. Also, I think a little texture (i.e., small lumps of avocado) make it better.

Stir in the salt, pepper and lime juice. Stir in the chopped cilantro.

Serve with your favorite tortilla chips and fresh veggies for dipping.
