As Summer 2026 comes to a close, I’m getting ready for new adventures. With a little time left on the island, I’m looking forward to visitors, last trips to the beach, and views of sunset skies in our backyard.
While I write this post, resident hummingbirds are vibrating around the deck and filling up at the feeder. Their energy is astounding. No wonder they feed constantly. They are probably fueling up for their fall flights south.
Lately, I am shifting between preparations for our fall exit and enjoying the final days of summer. Our garden beds are edged and mulched and look well cared for. I’ve started emptying potted plants into the compost bins, and washing and storing the pots. While it is difficult to restrain myself, I’ve made my final plant cuttings. I already have too many to nurse through the winter. Meanwhile, the beach calls to us on sunny days and visits with good friends are welcome interruptions from the work.
I had plans to share recipes on the blog and to document this glorious summer, but it was one of the busiest summers we’ve had in years and I didn’t make the time. There’s always next year to share some favorite recipes.
Perhaps the busyness made the relaxing moments all the more special. I took time to pick flowers at Ghost Farm (Instagram). Sunflowers, zinnias, and cosmos brightened our home this August. We made time for a favorite summer activity, dining on fish and chips at Eastville Beach while watching the sun set over West Chop. After leaving the island, we’ll have a week to take care of some things at home and pack for our next adventure. We’re heading to France, where we plan to follow the Loire River from where it exits into the sea on the West coast to its source in the South. We’re looking forward to seeing châteaux, beautiful gardens, underground dwellings, and art. We hope to get in a little hiking, try some wines, sample good food, and practice a little French. I won’t be posting on the blog, but I will share photos on social media.
