Parmesan Basil Sourdough Quick Bread

Loaf of Parmesan Basil Sourdough Quick Bread

This Parmesan basil sourdough quick bread has an earthy Parmesan flavor paired with the peppery, minty flavor of basil. There’s a biscuit flavor to it too, thanks to the baking powder.

The dense consistency of this bread makes it easy to slice. Try it still warm from the oven. It won’t slice well if it’s hot.

This bread is great for toasting. Try it with fried or poached eggs. Use it for avocado toast. Top it with slices of heirloom tomatoes or oven roasted cherry tomatoes with a little balsamic vinegar.

Ingredients

You’ll need the following ingredients to make a loaf of Parmesan basil sourdough quick bread.

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup sourdough starter
  • 1/3 cup fresh basil, finely chopped

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Butter a loaf baking pan.

In a large mixing bowl, add the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Stir the grated cheese into the dry ingredients.

In a smaller bowl, add the egg and whisk it. Add the milk, melted butter and stir. Add the sourdough starter and stir again.

Pour the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients and fold them in with a silicone spatula, until they are just blended.

Fold the basil into the batter.

Spoon the batter into the loaf pan. Bake the bread in the oven until it is lightly browned on top and a cake tester inserted into the loaf comes out clean (about 50 minutes).

Cool the loaf on a wire rack for about 10 minutes. Remove it from the pan and let it cool before slicing it.
