New Cookbooks for Fall and Winter 2019

Cookbooks for Fall and Winter 2019

Several new cookbooks look great for changing up our fall and winter dining routines.

If you are looking for a gift for someone who loves to cook, one of these cookbooks might be perfect.

Nothing Fancy

I’m seeing lots of positive reviews of Nothing Fancy recipes on blogs and food web sites. In a recent New York Times article, the book’s author, Alison Roman, describes her “…philosophy of cooking for others: Make it about unfussy food and unfussy vibes.” I’m on board with that!

I used Alison’s dry-brined turkey recipe and it was delicious. Here are a few other recipes that I would like to try.

  • Labneh Dip With Sizzled Scallions and Chile
  • Chicories with Preserved Lemon, Yogurt, and Mint
  • Sungold Pasta with Lemony Shellfish, Garlic, and Pistachios
  • Slow-Roasted Oregano Chicken With Buttered Tomatoes
  • Crushed Peas with Burrata and Black Olives
  • Upside-Down Apricot Tart
  • Crispy Chocolate Cake with Hazelnut and Sour Cream

Vegan Mediterranean

Vegan food with an emphasis on the goodness and health benefits of the Mediterranean diet. I see lots of my Middle Eastern favorites, such as mujadara, ful medamas, baba ghanoush and falafel. Here are some other items from the index that caught my eye.

  • Potato Soup with Za’atar and Marcona Almonds
  • Lemony Asparagus Pasta
  • Spicy Eggplant Polenta
  • Roasted Pine Nut Orzo
  • Tahini Cauliflower with Caramelized Onions
  • Pistachio Baklava

If you need to avoid soy, there are a number of recipes listed as soy free in the index.

Midnight Chicken (& Other Recipes Worth Living For)

Ella Risbridger’s cookbook was released in June, so technically, it’s not new this fall. This is a “feel good” cookbook. People like its recipes, but they’re also talking about all of the other things this book contains, including lovely illustrations, uplifting stories and words of encouragement.

I haven’t cooked anything from this book yet, but these recipes are on my list.

  • Smoky Beetroot and Pistachio Soup
  • Fig, Fennel, Freekeh & Cauliflower
  • Blackened Broccoli & Bittersweet Almonds (on Toast)
  • Saturday Afternoon Charred Leek Lasagna
  • Walnut, Clementine & Cardamom Cake for Christmas
  • Whipped Goat’s Cheese & Ginger Nut Creams

Cook Something: Recipes to Rely On

Canal House’s cooking school style cookbook might be great to give to someone just starting out in the kitchen. The authors, Melissa Hamilton and Christopher Hirsheimer have packed the book with instructions ranging from basic to master cooking techniques (every way to prepare eggs, shucking oysters, making sauces, etc.). The book include 300 recipes, including some of these inviting options.

  • Toasts and cracker toppings, such as
    • Lima Bean & Lemon Mash
    • Blue Cheese & Watercress Mash
    • Bacon Scallion Butter
  • Corn and Zucchini Salad with Cumin Chèvre
  • Poached Salmon with Lemon Butter Sauce
  • Vinegar-Braised Chicken & Onions
  • Green Beans with Ginger, Scallions & Cilantro
  • Lentils with Roasted Beets
  • Risotto Bianco with Preserved Lemon
  • Caramelized Apple Galette
  • Roasted Rhubarb Shortcakes
