It’s the weekend!

It's the weekend! Number 335, View of the Start of the Total Solar Eclipse from Derby Center, VT

We’re looking forward to the arrival of family this weekend and celebrating my sister’s birthday. We’ll light the grill and spend some quality time outside!

Have a great spring weekend!

Two weeks into retirement and it has been a lot! That’s partly because it coincided with tax season and a number of other tasks involving research and paperwork.

But, there’s been plenty of fun mixed in with the work. We had a terrific visit to Brooklyn. The weather was blustery and a little damp on Saturday, so we visited the Cloisters, focusing on the museum instead of the grounds. Louis and Jorja made us a Spanish-themed dinner on Friday night, including homemade butter. Dinner was out of this world! We ate well at an Italian restaurant on Saturday night. Of course, there were bagels for breakfast every day. Everything was delicious!

Here’s what I have to share this weekend.

  • Your Ultimate Spring Reading List—11 Books for Every Genre — Several of these books are on my TBR list. (Camille Styles)
  • Speaking of reading, here are some books that I’ve been reading or listening to lately.
    • Kindred by Octavia Butler: Dana, a 26-year old Black woman living in California in 1976 time-travels back to the 1800s to a slave-owning plantation where her ancestor, Rufus, lives. Dana gets pulled back to the plantation each time that Rufus needs rescuing, experiencing first-hand life as a Black woman living as a slave. My son loaned me this book and I’m so glad that he did. (Bookshop.org)
    • The David Wolf Mystery Thriller Series Books 1-4 and Books 5-7  by Jeff Carson: I spent a lot of time listening to this series about a sheriff in a small ski resort town in Colorado. David Wolf and his deputies solve crime after crime. Wolf is living on his family farm, sharing the raising of his son with his ex-wife, and trying to cope with multiple personal losses. There are some chewing tobacco, gun toting stereotypes, but I am enjoying this crime-solving cast of characters. (Audible)
  • I seldom think about using celery salt, but Curio Spice’s version piqued my interest. It has hints of thyme, mint, and bay leaf. (Curio Spice)
  • Gruyère and Ham Scones — These scones are addictive! (Sea Salt and Sailor Stripes)
  • Goodness: A baby had no home after a stay in the NICU. Her nurses adopted her. — What a wonderful family story! (The Washington Post)
