We’re looking forward to getting back to the island for the weekend. When the weather clears, we want to make progress on our outdoor painting. Maybe the skies will be clear enough for star gazing in the evenings.
Have a great weekend!
In late August and early September, I have an emotional reaction to displays of chrysanthemums at farm stands and grocery stores. They make me sad. They are a symbol of summer’s end. Never mind that they come in beautiful, vibrant, happy colors. Or, that fall is a spectacular time of year. I love fall. I just love summer more.
Not only do I need to fully realize that summer is over, I also always have a summer plant or two that is still going strong. My red mandevilla is in full bloom and doesn’t need any company yet.
I’ll eventually pick up fall plants for the front of the house. Usually I go with mums. The colors are lovely and there’s no work involved. Just plop the pot on the step and call it a day. But, I just read an article in the Post that has me considering whether to put a little more effort into a fall arrangement and plant perennials that can be transferred to the garden. The decision might be determined by how much effort it takes to plant the three huge bags of bulbs that I bought last weekend.
Here’s what I have to share this weekend:
- 7 container plants for fall that will pay off in the spring — I like the idea of decorative plants that can be planted in the garden after using them in containers. (The Washington Post)
- Banned Books Week — Next week is banned books week. Here are the top 13 most challenged books. (American Library Association)
- Fall Pleasure: A Short, Perfect Book — The passion with which these books (and those in the comments) are reviewed makes me want to read them all! (Cup of Jo)
- Baking 101: How I Test My Oven with Sliced Bread — If you’re planning to start baking this fall, these tips might come in handy. (Joy the Baker)
- Savory Roasted Cherries — For a delicious appetizer, I recommend slicing a baguette, spreading the slices with goat cheese, and topping them with these roasted cherries. (Sea Salt and Sailor Stripes)
- Goodness: Little Boy Reunited With LEGO Man After Creating a ‘Missing Person’ Poster — This weekend’s joy is about the little things, like Lego man. It made me smile. (Good News Network)
