It’s the weekend!

I’m looking forward to a few sunny days and lots of time outdoors! The other night, I heard my first screech owl call of the summer and I’m hoping to hear more this weekend.

Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend!

When Tom and I went out to dinner recently, we were seated next to a woman and her daughter. When their appetizers arrived, the woman, Cass, raved about her dish. It was zucchini bread topped with pickled zucchini and served with an herbed ricotta. It was the greenest zucchini bread I’d ever seen!

We struck up a conversation with them. They were in town for a golf tournament that the daughter, Maya, was playing in. It turns out that thirteen-year-old Maya is a very good player. We predict that we’ll see a lot of her in the future.

We talked through the entire dinner, much to the amusement of the waitress. Maya told me that she’d read 18 books this summer, a very impressive number. She said that her count wasn’t as good as last summer, when she read 23 books! She opened her extremely organized book list on her phone, came over to my chair and shared many of her favorite books with me. I typed them into my book notes and she looked over my shoulder, correcting my spelling when I mistyped a book title. Maya had just finished reading The Fault in Our Stars and she shared that it was so sad it made her heart ache, but it was a wonderful story. I could feel the ache in my own heart as she described the book. I told her about The Book Thief and All the Light We Cannot See (just in case she needed a little more heartache). We’d both read Austen this summer, Sense and Sensibility for Maya and Persuasion for me. She said that she just couldn’t finish Pride and Prejudice. It wasn’t for her. That made me laugh.

We learned all about the family travels around the world, saw pictures of the rest of their family and their new dog. By the end of the meal, we’d exchanged contact information and promises to stay in touch.

It isn’t every night that you go out for a good meal and leave the restaurant with new friends.

This is a wonderful article about Maya and her family: Gaudin’s Life is a Story of Love (Drive, Chip &Putt).

Here’s what I’m sharing for your weekend perusing.
