Last Saturday’s snow and ice canceled our dinner with family and we are looking forward to seeing them this weekend!
I hope that you are serenaded by peepers this weekend.
Based on the weather and what I’ve been cooking, it must be March. Last week I made colcannon (sautéed cabbage with mashed potatoes and Irish cheddar cheese) and it was delicious. One of these days, I will share a recipe. I also made Irish soda bread. I love those plump golden raisins!
Last weekend’s storm brought wind, rain, snow and ice. The nice thing about March is that the strong sun melts the snow quickly and warm days are interspersed with the cold ones. We also “sprang forward” last weekend and the days are lighter a little longer. Folks on Martha’s Vineyard are reporting that they’ve heard the pinkletinks (a local term for peepers), but we haven’t heard them yet in Arlington. We’ve been outside checking for that lovely sound. We saw bunches of crocuses this week and what a welcome sight!
While I enjoy the pleasures of March, I keep thinking of how lucky I am to be able to do so right now. I think about the Ukrainian people every day and I keep returning to President Zelensky’s speech to Congress and the video he played. “Now, I am almost 45 years old. Today my age stopped when the hearts of more than 100 children stopped beating.”
Here’s what I’m sharing this week.
