It’s the weekend!

It's the weekend! Number 171, Bouquet Purchased at a Roadside Stand

I don’t have much planned this weekend. I’m hoping to take long walks and to work in the yard a bit.

I hope that you have a great weekend.

Last weekend we went to the beach thinking of a final summer beach day. As soon as we opened the car door, we knew that we wouldn’t last long. The wind was blowing so hard that we didn’t attempt to put up umbrellas and I couldn’t keep my hat on. The water was rough and the air was cooler than we expected. Wearing sweatshirts, we ate our lunch, holding onto our sandwiches with two hands so that they didn’t fly away.

While eating lunch I looked down the beach and saw lots of colorful kites from the kite surfers. I realized that this day that wasn’t meeting my expectations (swimming and reading), was perfect for others, who wanted to fly on the water. There is a balance to these things.

  • What Are Your Top Three Books? — A Cup of Jo’s readers weigh in with their top three books and my reading list just got a lot longer. (A Cup of Jo)
  • It’s hard to pick my top three books. Here are the first three books I thought of, followed by two more that quickly came to mind:
    • Little Women by Louisa May Alcott: As a kid, this was one of my favorite books. The recent movie reminded me of how much I loved that book.
    • The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini: It haunted me for the longest time. Months after listening to Khaled Hosseini read his book, I heard an interview with him and I was transported back to his story.
    • Emma by Jane Austen: A few summers ago, I read Emma while on vacation and it was such a charming and funny story.
    • Blood, Bones & Butter by Gabrielle Hamilton: Gabrielle is responsible for my love of Negronis and radishes with butter. I won’t forget her description of family parties, with beverages cooled in the river and candle-lit bags lighting the yard.
    • All the Light I Cannot See by Anthony Doerr: This is such a powerful story of two young people born into opposite sides of a terrible war.
  • I recommend a batch of these blueberry sourdough scones for breakfast this weekend. (Sea Salt and Sailor Stripes)
  • Speaking of food, we grilled these Roman Steaks last weekend and they were delicious! (New York Times Cooking)
