We’re off for a socially-distanced long weekend on Martha’s Vineyard. We are looking forward to swimming in the warm, late-summer ocean.
Have a good holiday weekend! Stay safe.
A couple of weeks ago, we heard this year’s first crickets. Each evening, their song has been getting louder as more crickets join in.
Mornings have been cooler and I’ve donned a light jacket for our morning walks.
I see a few red leaves on a tree near the brook behind our house. That tree always starts the fall foliage show a little early.
Last Friday night, it was already getting dark when we went outside for our “cocktail hour.”
As I checked out my purchases at our local farm stand at the end of the week, I had a crazy amount of bread. A baguette, a large crusty loaf, a loaf of cinnamon bread and spinach sandwich wraps. Cold weather = carbs, right?
In hopes of stretching my garden into fall, I planted more lettuce and rainbow chard. A few weeks ago I planted more cucumber seeds. I’m not sure that they are going to do much, but I had the seeds and thought that I’d take a chance.
I discovered that the huge plant that had volunteered from last year’s garden (a spring green medley) is Red Russian Kale. I was so excited to know what we’d been eating all summer! I’m harvesting some of its seeds to plant next year. Small pandemic joys.

- Goodness: Grey Barn, on Martha’s Vineyard, is donating the proceeds from the sale of their bread on every third Monday of the month to The New England Farmers of Color Land Trust. You can read about it in Grey Barn’s post Where Are The Black Farmers?.
