Classic Blues

Deep, dark classic blue is a color that has always been popular. It reminds us of constants that have been around forever – the evening sky and lake water just before dark. It’s an easy color to wear and to decorate with. It can be bold and make a statement. It can also be neutral, accommodating other colors.

Pantone’s color of the year for 2020 is classic blue. I’ve come up with some ways to add it to our wardrobe and our homes.

When I think of classic blue in clothing and household objects, I think of blazers with brass buttons, blue and white striped Breton shirts, Blue Willow dishes, old Noxzema bottles and Chinese blue and white porcelain vases. It’s a range of blue that includes cobalt and indigo, which may not be an exact match with Pantone’s “classic blue,” but I think we’ve got a little wiggle room on this color.

I am a huge fan of blue, which you probably know if you read my blog. For example, here are some classic blues in my home (everything from blue glass bottles to flannel sheets), clothes, accessories and a touch of classic blue from Martha’s Vineyard.

Finding Classic Blues

If you are excited about adding some classic blues to your wardrobe and your home, you might not have to look far. The nice thing about classic blue is that it’s been around a while and most of us already have items in that color.

Pull your old blue blazer out of the back of your closet. Borrow a flow blue platter and some Blue Willow tea cups from your grandmother’s china cabinet.

Turn the search for blue into an adventure, with trips to local thrift shops and vintage clothing stores.

Search Etsy for handmade items and vintage blue goods.

I’ve done a little searching in online shops and have some suggestions to share.

Classic Blues for Your Home

I found some lovely classic blue things for the home, including a woven throw, gingham tablecloth, vintage French floral fabric, linen bedding, Blue Willow tea cups, cotton towels, stoneware pottery bowls, African fabric and a vintage Moroccan rug. I’m coveting that rug!

Most of these items are available from Etsy vendors. The bed linens and towels are made by Matouk, a Massachusetts company known for its beautiful linens. You can click on the images to go to the vendor’s website.

Classic Blues to Wear

Here are some clothes and accessories from Etsy vendors and Everlane, a company that has a reputation for fair pricing and ethical manufacturing practices. The selections include a blue cashmere cardigan, silk chiffon scarf, vintage woven cotton and leather belt, blue and white porcelain bracelet, vintage blue and white bandana, blue blazer, blue pants, Blue Willow earrings and a vintage blue suede belt.

I must have been anticipating the classic blue color of the year with this post last spring: Blue and White Planters. Last summer I grouped blue and white planters with solid blue ones and I loved the arrangements! I can’t wait to fill them again this summer.
