Celebrate summer’s harvest with a Caprese salad. Ripe tomatoes and mozzarella star in this salad, with basil and olive oil in essential supporting roles. Salt and pepper complete the performance. Voilà! You have summer in the form of a salad!

This recipe makes 4 – 6 side servings or 2 main course servings. As a main course, serve this with fresh crusty bread.

Tips

  • Serve the salad at room temperature (not cold) for the best flavor.
  • Buffalo mozzarella is delicious in this salad, but it can be difficult to find and expensive. Use good mozzarella from the grocery store if that is easier.
  • Instead of tearing the mozzarella into pieces, you can cut it into slices.

Ingredients

You need the following ingredients to make a Caprese salad.

  • 4 medium ripe tomatoes
  • 6 ounces mozzarella
  • Handful basil leaves
  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon flaky sea salt
  • Fresh coarsely ground black pepper, a few twists of the grater

Directions

Cut tomatoes into 1/2-inch thick slices and spread them out on a large plate.

Tear the mozzarella into small pieces and sprinkle them over the tomatoes.

Tear the basil leaves into small pieces and distribute them over the dish.

Drizzle olive oil over the salad. Sprinkle the salt and pepper over everything.

Serve the salad immediately.
