Welcoming 2026

Welcome to 2026! I hope that the year is off to a good start for you. It’s been darn cold across much of the country, so I wish you a warm and cozy winter.

I’ve been bundling up for our neighborhood walks. I’m considering pulling out my balaclava ski mask if the wind continues to make the temperatures feel much lower than they are. We walked around the frozen Arlington Reservoir recently and the wind was bitter as it blew at us across the frozen water.

I’m heading to New York later this week to visit family and attend an art exhibit that includes some of my son’s work, but I wanted to acknowledge the new year and send everyone my wishes for a happy, healthy, and peaceful year.

I didn’t make any specific resolutions for 2026, but I have general goals for the year. While I was traveling this fall, I made a list of things that I wanted to accomplish when I got home, jotting it down in a note on my phone. When I got home, I transferred it to my Moleskin notebook, determined to tackle the list items and have the satisfaction of checking them off. It’s an ambitious list of big and small tasks. Some are already completed. Others will take time. This list represents specific goals that feel realistic and necessary to get my home in order.

I thought about trying the popular trend of picking a word for the year and mulled over a lot of words. I’ve recently been focusing on decluttering and that made me think of things like clarity and simplicity. In the end, I didn’t come up with a single word. Here are a few words and phrases that I like for the year:

  • Joy. Always look for joy. It can be easy for me to forget that one and get bogged down in the negative.
  • Be present in the moment. Stop and enjoy what I’m doing and where I am. Breathe deeply and look around myself. Take advantage of what is happening right now.
  • Simplicity. I hope that simplifying things will make life easier and help me better experience the first two items.

Big goals. Little goals. Whatever your goals, your hopes, and dreams for the new year are, I wish you the best in realizing them.

  1. Ah Dottie, wishing you all the best for the New Year! And yes, so hard to see joy sometimes. Like today with the shooting by ICE agents. I just can’t believe that all this terrible stuff continues to happen every day!
Anyway, here’s to our families, to Art, to Life!
    Love and hugs from Anne.
