If you love Negronis, consider adding this White Negroni cocktail to your repertoire. Two French bitters replace the traditional Campari and sweet vermouth and the result is another hit in the bittersweet cocktail family.
The story behind the White Negroni cocktail is that it was invented by a British bartender, Wayne Collins, in France in 2001. He substituted bitters that were on hand for those in a traditional Negroni. The recipe is a made of equal parts gin, the aperitif Lillet Blanc, an aromatic citrusy wine, and Suze, a bitter gentian-based liqueur.
Tips
- I substituted Kina L’Aéro d’Or after reading David Lebovitz’s version of this cocktail. As David notes, Kina L’Aéro d’Or has a little quinine and wormwood flavor.
- If you have time to chill the liquor in advance, I recommend it.
Ingredients
You’ll need these ingredients to make two cocktails.
- 2 ounces gin
- 2 ounces Suze
- 2 ounces Kina L’Aéro d’Or
- 2 twists of grapefruit zest for garnish
Directions
Add the gin, Suze and Kina L’Aéro d’Or to a cocktail pitcher filled with ice. Stir until well chilled and then strain into two glasses. Squeeze the grapefruit twists over the drinks skin side down to add a few drops of oil into the cocktails, then add the twists to the drinks. Enjoy!
