In June we visited Wave Hill Public Gardens, a 28-acre estate in The Bronx, New York City. This lovely oasis is a wonderful escape on a hot summer day (it was technically late spring, but the heat was pure summer). Wave Hill is lush with flowers, lawns, waterways and woodlands. The photo above shows a beautiful view of the Hudson River near the Wave Hill entrance.
The greenhouses were quite warm when we visited, but that didn’t stop us from taking the time to explore and marvel at the unusual, almost alien-looking succulents.
Ferns in one of the greenhouses.
Colored lettuces glow in the brilliant sunlight from one of the culinary gardens. I particularly liked the culinary and herb gardens. Small fig trees, tomato plants and every imaginable herb filled the spaces.
Part of a collection of container plants that were beautifully arranged.
Leaving the culinary gardens, the walkway is lined with lavender in a range of purples and even a little white.
Rambling through fields of flowers is an excellent weekend pastime.
There are plenty of shady, quiet spots to stop for a while.
A woodland walk passes this gazebo.
Beautiful stone walls and patios are scattered around the property.
There’s greenery and color at every turn.
On a hot sunny day, you’re bound to need a little refreshment. There is a café with indoor and outdoor seating at the main building.
City views remind you that you haven’t traveled far from downtown.
A pool supported a collection of colorful water plants.
When you are in the mood to get away from everyone, visit this beautiful spot and wander…
And wander some more…
The museum was our next-to-last stop at Wave Hill. Unfortunately, it closed earlier than we expected, so we missed it. We missed the garden shop too. We had walked through it earlier in the day and it looked like a great place to find gifts that one might not find in city shops. We’ll have to go back another time.
If you plan to visit, here’s a link to the Wave Hill website. We learned about Wave Hill through this New York Times article.
