Walking Boston, Winter 2024

The last day of 2024 was sunny and warm and we decided to walk in downtown Boston, joining the early New Year’s Eve revelers.

The gold dome of the state capital glimmered in the sun and the city was lively with folks enjoying the weather and the annual Ice Sculpture Stroll. We started at the Public Gardens and Boston Common.

Only a little ice remained on the pond where the swan boats glide in summer. The willows around the pond were lit up by the sun, draping the pond’s edges in chartreuse.

The ducklings were dressed for the holidays.

On the Boston Common, The Embrace Memorial sculpture reflected the sunlight.

The Park Street Church steeple was silhouetted against the brilliant blue sky.

In Boston’s City Hall Plaza, the ice sculptures celebrated the 250th anniversary of Massachusetts.

The New England Aquarium had a sculpture about the sea turtles it rescues and cares for every year. In spite of the melting, the details of this sculpture were remarkable.

Here’s a close-up of one section of the turtle sculpture.

As we walked the Rose Kennedy Greenway, we came upon several pieces from a Winter Lights installation called Hatchlings, created by Studio HHH. I love the concept for their project. They posed the question, “What if the Hatch Memorial Shell on the Charles River Esplanade hatched a cluster of baby ‘shells’ that wandered off down The Greenway like adventurous ducklings?” We Bostonians love our ducklings!

We continued our meanderings until the sun was about to set. It was a great day to be in the city!
