Summer Reading, 2024

Stack of Books for Summer Reading

I’m looking forward to slowing down and taking time to read this summer. There’s nothing like reading under an umbrella at the beach or in a hammock in the shade of a tree. Here are some book recommendations from a variety of sources.

I have a backlog of TBR (to be read) books, but it’s always fun to read about what people are recommending. We’re heading to Brooklyn to spend time with Louis this week, and I have just enough time to share a short post about summer reading before I leave. (BTW, no weekend post this week.)

I haven’t read much since our trip to Paris, although I did start Adam Gopnik’s Paris to the Moon (Bookshop.org) and I’m really enjoying his stories about living in Paris.

Tom observed that I was reading Gopnik’s book and asked if it was the Adam Gopnik who writes for the New Yorker. When I confirmed that it was, Tom had a secret smile on his face. A few days later, on Mother’s Day, he presented me with a copy of Mastering the Art of Making a Cookbook (New Yorker), in which Gopnik reviews The Editor: How Publishing Legend Judith Jones Shaped Culture in America by Sara Franklin (Bookshop.org). Tom had ordered the book for me and it would arrive at our home after we returned from France. It is on my TBR list for the summer.

As is Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver (Bookshop.org).

I’ve just finished listening to Unfinished Business by Shankari Chandran (Audible), a novel about a CIA agent investigating the murder of a journalist in Sri Lanka in 2009, during the civil war. It’s gritty, depressing, and gripping. I couldn’t stop listening to it. I want a series about the CIA agent.

I’ll listen to more books this summer, including the first book in a mystery series, A Long Time Dead (Audible) by JM Dalgliesh and Avery Cunningham’s debut novel The Mayor of Maxwell Street (Audible).

That’s as far as I’ve planned for my summer 2024 reading. But, I’d love to dig into some of the books from the following lists.

I was reading the comments on this Cup of Jo post and readers recommended some young adult books, including Rainbow Rowell’s books and The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuer. I love a good young adult book and will investigate these recommendations. I thought that you might be interested too.

If you’ve read anything that you loved, please share it in the comments.
