Tom and I headed to New Hampshire last weekend to visit family. We’d picked a free weekend and hadn’t thought about the fact that it was foliage viewing season. As we drove north, we were blown away by the spectacular views of mountains covered with fall colors. It turns out that 2019 is a great year for “leaf peeping.”
We’re guilty of forgetting about the attractions in our own backyard. I don’t remember when we last traveled north to see the fall colors. Apparently we were lucky that we picked last weekend to visit family, because this year appears to be an exceptional one for the foliage display.
Few people know the northern New Hampshire woods better than my brother John. He told us that it isn’t often that all of the colors peak at the same time. The reds, yellows, or oranges will take turns changing and the leaves of one color drop before the other colors appear. This year, they are all on display at the same time.
If you have time to head north in the next week, I highly recommend that you treat yourself to a little leaf peeping. It will take your breath away.
There was a magnificent panorama spread out ahead us as we traveled up Route 93, through Franconia Notch and further north.
A view of birch trees and fall foliage from the side of the highway.
The mountains were blanketed with color.
Hundreds of trees bursting with fall beauty before shedding their leaves for winter.
At a stop on the highway, the colors roll on through the hills and mountains in the distance.
Red, yellow, orange and chartreuse leaves.
We pulled off at this popular stop packed with people.
There’s a hint of foliage reflected in the cloud-darkened lake.
I took this shot from the car window and it’s a little blurred from the movement. It almost feels like an Impressionist painting.

If you are thinking of going to New Hampshire to see the colors, here is a foliage tracker to locate the peak locations.
