Snow blanketed our gardens and the world was magical in its sparkly white covering. I’ve been looking at photos of winter gardens recently and decided to capture some of our winter wonderland while the snow was fresh.
I hadn’t been looking forward to shoveling the first snow of the season, but even the dreaded hard work didn’t take away from the beauty of the snow-covered world outside. The red winterberries popped in the clumps of white snow. A single robin nibbles on them every day. We were lucky that a flock of birds hadn’t eaten all of them before the storm, so that we could enjoy their brilliant winter display. As I was shoveling, the robin chirped from a nearby tree, “Move on, move on! I want a snack!”
The heavy snow covered our star magnolia making a slightly surreal display.
Pine boughs always look so beautiful dusted in snow. They’re made for wearing winter and look like they’ve donned their holiday finest.
Tree limbs piled at the edge of the yard, a refuge to birds and animals, provide even more shelter with their snowy covering.
Cages designed to protect plants from the rabbits turned into quirky yard ornaments. This one looks like a white Spaghetti-O.
More strange forms in a yard prepared for the off season.
Privet berries and winterberries hang over our stone wall, looking like fruits dusted in sugar and ready to be served for dessert. Luckily for the robin, we didn’t partake.
The snow came in from one side, as demonstrated by these river birch trunks.
A view looking straight up into our dogwood’s branches with glimpses of snow-filled sky.
While I’m hoping for an easy winter, when the snow comes I need to remember to stop and enjoy its splendor.
