Mojito Cocktails Garnished with Mint

Mojito cocktails are a great summer drink. Made with mint, lime juice and white rum, they are a perfectly cool refreshment on a hot summer evening. Leave out the rum, if you want a non-alcoholic version.

Mojito cocktails originated in Cuba, where most of the main ingredients, rum, sugar and limes, are readily available. Mojitos are made with white rum, a crisp, refreshing alternative to the more rich dark rums.

Traditional mojito recipes call for granulated sugar, but sugar often doesn’t dissolve in cold liquids. I’ve replaced the sugar with simple syrup, which blends easily into the drink.

This recipe makes two cocktails.

Tip

  • You can garnish the drinks with a lime wheel as well as a mint sprig.

Special Equipment

You’ll want a muddler to crush the mint. A muddler is a wooden or metal long-handled bartender’s tool that has a ridged bottom for crushing the mint or fruit.

Ingredients

  • 12 – 16 mint leaves, plus two mint stems for garnish
  • 1 ounce simple syrup
  • 4 ounces white rum
  • 1 1/2 ounces lime juice
  • Chilled club soda to top off the glasses (4 – 6 ounces)

Directions

Put the mint leaves and simple syrup in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Muddle the leaves by crushing them with a muddler.

Add the rum and lime juice to the shaker. Add ice. Shake the cocktails to chill them.

Add ice to two glasses. Pour the cocktail into the glasses, using a strainer to keep the ice and mint out of the glasses if your shaker doesn’t have one built in.

Top the glasses with club soda. Garnish with mint.
