My husband and I recently walked around the Fresh Pond Reservation Loop Trail in Cambridge, Mass. It was a bitter cold day in late November, but that didn’t stop the walkers and runners, who bundled up to use the path around the reservoir.
It was late afternoon when we visited and the sun was on its descent, casting an orange glow on the trees and water.
With the lush summer foliage fallen to the ground, many other lovely sites came into focus.
Like this old fallen tree covered with moss.
And this small brick structure perched in the cold, dark water with orange sunlight lighting up everything in the background.
And this wood structure created by visitors.
These shrubs filled with brilliant red berries seemed dressed up for the holiday season.
We can often spot hooded mergansers and other birds on the water, but it was a relatively quiet time on the pond and we didn’t see them.
However, we did spot a red-tailed hawk that very thoughtfully stayed perched on a tree limb while everyone on the path stopped to admire it. It seemed comfortable with the company of humans – from a distance, of course.
Long after the sun had set, the calm water reflected a touch of pink from the sky.
As darkness crept in and the path quieted, we had a brief glimpse of swans gliding on a small pond next to the reservoir.
If you’re thinking of going, you can find a little more information about the trail and a map here.
