We’re going to see the Robert Reich film, The Last Class, tonight and looking forward to enjoying our last weekend on the island for a while.
Have a wonderful weekend!
As our time on the island draws to a close, it is still full of friends and activities. We met with friends Katy and Bruce on a beach that we’d never been to on the island. It was a beautiful place to have a late afternoon picnic and we had a wonderful time catching up. My friend Dee Dee and I often have “virtual walks” during which we talk on the phone while walking. While those walks are a wonderful way to keep up, it was soooo good to see her in person this week. Tom and I also celebrated our 37th anniversary. We sat outside at dusk and watched night arrive, then we grilled and indulged in fresh corn and tomatoes.
Yard activities are keeping me busy. I finished transplanting and mulching during an extremely hot day last week and I was so glad to be done with it! Last weekend’s rain was very welcome. The plants drank it up. Mushrooms popped up all over the yard.
Now that the planting is complete, I’m turning my attention to fall preparations. I picked most of the basil and blended it with olive oil, put it in jars, and refrigerated it for the cooking this winter. Some herbs are going into the garden in hopes that they will overwinter. I’m emptying pots into the compost, cleaning them, and putting them away for the year. Most of the days have been cool and sunny — perfect for these outdoor tasks.
Here’s what I have to share this weekend:
- A Camp Where You Can Read All Day (No Kids Allowed) — A summer camp all about reading! (The New York Times)
- There’s no place like Stars Hollow — A fascinating article about the interest in and redefining of the Gilmore Girls. I wonder if this is also happening with Schitt’s Creek? (Vox)
- I love Nigella Lawson’s brownies, but Katharine’s Hepburn’s recipe just came to my attention. A baking contest is needed later this fall.
- Katharine Hepburn’s Brownies (The New York Times)
- Nigella Lawson’s Brownies (Nigella)
- Basil and Radish Green Pesto — Two fresh greens pair deliciously in this summer topping. (Sea Salt and Sailor Stripes)
- Goodness: Moms in the Picture — Celebrating Moms with their children. I enjoyed Kim’s comment, “I love how many of the photos are of children just LYING ON TOP of their moms. Like, it is really physical being a mother, and these pictures show that so well.”
About the photo: Mushrooms popped up in our yard during a rainy spell.
