We’re looking forward to a weekend packed with activities. On Saturday, we’re starting the day at a No Kings protest in Lexington, then we’re driving to CT to meet Louis and Jorja for an early Father’s Day celebration. Weather permitting, we’re spending Sunday at the Parker River Wildlife Refuge, hoping to spot some interesting birds.
Have a great weekend and happy Father’s Day to those celebrating.
Our three-week trip to several Southern states was terrific. First and foremost, we enjoyed catching up with old friends and family. We came away from the journey determined to stay in touch with the many special people in our lives.
We also visited new places (Charleston, SC for Tom, Savannah, GA and the Southern coast of North Carolina for both of us) and going back to places we’ve enjoyed in the past, such as Asheville, NC and Nashville, TN.
We were excited to see new birds, including Indigo Buntings, Scarlet Tanagers, Summer Tanagers, Wood Storks, Black- and Yellow-crowned Herons, but the list is much longer. We visited two rookeries (at White Point Garden, also known as the Battery, in downtown Charleston, SC and Cypress Wetlands Rookery in Port Royal, SC). We also saw Bluebirds, which we’ve seen before and can’t get enough of. We left for this trip with Bluebird sightings on our wish list and we were not disappointed.
We walked and hiked new trails that we would love to go back to, among them Bear’s Den in Bluemont, VA, Radnor Lake State Park and Edwin Warner Park in Nashville, TN, the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley in Winchester, VA, and the North Carolina Arboretum in Asheville, NC.
We ate so much delicious food. The fried chicken and okra at Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room in Savannah, GA were scrumptious. The shrimp and grits and delicious biscuits at Bonnie Blue in Winchester, VA were mouth-wateringly good. In Greenville, SC, my sister Cathie made fantastic street tacos and salsas for the entire clan and we were so happy to be part of that gathering. My cousin Nancy, in Myrtle Beach, SC, made the best date nut bread I’ve ever had and gave us an extra loaf to take with us, making us feel so lucky.
