It’s the weekend!

It's the weekend! Number 344, Moon Rising Over Edgartown Harbor

This weekend is packed with fun Boston activities. I’m looking forward to tea at the Boston Public Library with my friend Zoe and a Boston Harbor brunch cruise with Tom.

I hope that you’re able to get outside and enjoy some summer weather this weekend!

We’re slowly making progress on our house chores, but as is often the case, some of them have grown and grown. We have indoor work for rainy days and exterior tasks for days that aren’t too hot. On sunny days, mid to late afternoon we call it quits and head to the beach. A swim in cool water and reading in the beach chair is a nice reward.

Evenings are relaxing. We’re outside as much as possible, grilling delicious meals, glimpsing a little sunset color in the sky, watching the hummingbirds come to the feeder, and enjoying the sounds of early evening.

One night we had a traditional American summer outing to watch the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks baseball team play (mvsharks). It’s always fun to sit outside on a summer evening and cheer the team.

Another evening we saw the talented Rhiannon Giddens in concert at Edgartown’s Old Whaling Church, which is a wonderful place to attend an event (Rhiannon Giddens and Vineyard Preservation Trust).

So far, this summer has been everything I love about the season. I heard my first crickets a couple of nights ago, signaling that summer is on the march. I’m trying to keep up with it to enjoy every minute.

Here’s what I am sharing this week.

  • The Eras Tour: Simone’s Version — Simone Biles and her redemption tour! This is a great overview of Simone’s career and her influence on gymnastics. (ESPN)
  • What Vocab Words Are You Into? — There are so many good words and thoughts on word usage in the comments of this post. (Cup of Jo)
    Two of my favorites are

    • “defenestration” – the action of throwing someone out of a window.
    • “petrichor” – the scent produced when rain falls on dry pavement or soil.
The etymology of this word is also interesting. Petra, from the Greek word for rock and ichor, the blood-like golden substance that flows in the veins of the Greek gods and goddesses.
  • Sophia Roe’s Charm Earring — Here’s a fun earring story and an introduction to an interesting chef. (The New York Times)
  • Peach Almond Galette — Make one of these galettes for the weekend. There won’t be any crumbs left. (Sea Salt and Sailor Stripes)
  • Goodness: Simone Biles Thrills in ALL FOUR Events to Lead U.S. to Team Gymnastics Gold — If you haven’t seen Simone’s routines from this summer’s games, this video shows all four of them. Get ready to be blown away! (YouTube)
