We’re back on the island this weekend and I’m looking forward to dinner with friends, a little beach time (rain gods permitting), and making more progress in the garden.
Have a great weekend!
Traditions are such a wonderful thing and we’ve been sharing two weeks of summer with our friends Rita and John for years. They arrived last weekend, just as we headed off the island, so our usual two weeks is a bit disrupted this year. Now that we are back, we’ll have lazy catch-ups on the beach and share food together.
I enjoy the pleasure of anticipating these summer visits and the ease with which they happen. There’s no need to start from scratch with planning and coordinating. Some things are good just the way that they have always been. Sure, the experience evolved over time. The children were once the main focus, with beach scavenger hunts, boogie boarding, attending the annual fireworks, and card tables serving as the “kids’ table” extension at the end of the adult table. Now the kids are grown and we are thrilled if they can join us for a quick visit. It’s quieter without their youthful voices, telling stories of their days. But, we still have this core tradition of being together in a place that we all love. Everything else comes together in one form or another. We’re lucky to share it.
Here’s what I have to share this weekend.
- How to help or donate to Hawaii residents displaced by Maui wildfires — While I was away from the blog and on vacation, tragedy struck in Hawaii. I’m sharing this article, in case you are looking for ways to help. (The Washington Post)
- Let’s Talk About the September Cover of Vogue — I like the reader comments on this Cup of Jo post that included two alternative covers found on Instagram: here and here. (Cup of Jo and Instagram)
- ‘Keep Your Clothes On,’ Sunflower Farm Warns Guests — For anyone needing a little levity right now. (The New York Times)
- The folks at Camille Styles did two taste tests that cover important food groups: pizza and chocolate. I’m adding both to my grocery cart soon. (Camille Styles)
- Peach Panzanella — I think that you’ll enjoy this delicious combination of juicy sweet peaches, crunchy grilled bread, and savory roasted onions. (Sea Salt and Sailor Stripes)
- Goodness: Melbourne’s trees bombarded with emailed love letters — This article is old, but just came across my radar. It made my day to think about the letters people wrote. (The Guardian)
