Happy Diwali! We had an early Diwali celebration with our friends last weekend. This is the second time that Topi and Andy have invited everyone to celebrate the holiday and it feels like the beginning of a wonderful tradition.
On a cold fall night, it was so nice to be warm and cozy together, in a home filled with colorful flowers and the aromas of delicious Indian dishes. There was a touch of spice in the air from incense burning in a small shrine and the World Series was playing in a back room, so that we could check the score from time to time.
The array of food was astounding. I tried everything. Topi is a great cook and she fed us and fed us and fed us. Such bounty!
I neglected to take a picture of our delicious starters. Our friend, Houda, made stuffed mushrooms and smoked salmon with a cucumber, dill and cream garnish. It was beautiful and delicious (please imagine).
Here are the main dishes. Topi made all of them!
Cauliflower, shrimp, green peas and curry.
Succulent okra with chickpeas.
Eggplant with green beans and coconut milk.
Rice scented with herbs.
A delicious spinach dish with lentils.
Cod coated with mouth-watering herbs.
Chicken with whole Garam Masala spices.
Pork with sweet potatoes.
Naan.
Susan made a delicious salad with fresh fruit. It was so good to have pomegranate again.
I tried my hand at rice pudding (Kheer) with cardamom and saffron, garnished with pistachios.
