Transport yourself back to the 1940s with this delicious Greyhound cocktail. It’s easy to make and tartly refreshing. I first heard about the Greyhound cocktail while listening to The Designer by Marius Gabriel. While dining at The Ritz in post-World War II Paris, Henry and Copper (two of the story’s main characters), drink Greyhounds. Henry is Russian and opts for Greyhounds made with vodka. They were traditionally made with gin.
The story behind these cocktails is that they were originally served at the restaurants found at Greyhound bus terminals. It turns out that Greyhound once had a restaurant chain called Post House. The things one learns when researching booze.
This recipe makes two cocktails.
Tips
- Substitute gin for the vodka.
- Leave out the simple syrup for a very tart drink.
- Serve the cocktail on ice if you prefer.
Ingredients
You’ll need the following ingredients for the Greyhound.
- 4 ounces of vodka
- 8 ounces of grapefruit juice (I recommend fresh squeezed)
- 2 teaspoons of simple syrup
Directions
Add the ingredients with a handful of ice cubes to a cocktail shaker or cocktail pitcher.
Shake (or stir) the ingredients and strain the cocktail into a martini glass.
Take a sip. Mmm.
Now, if I could have the rose-colored silk dress that Christian Dior made for Copper in the story, I’d be truly transported.
