On my trip to Paris this spring, I wandered the city marveling at architectural details, from rooftop shapes to ironwork on balconies, but some of my favorite details were door knobs and door knockers. I hope that you enjoy this eclectic collection of front door adornments as much as I do.
Walking the sidewalks of Paris, I often made slow progress toward my destination as I stopped to admire colorfully painted doors and their hardware. As is often the case in older cities, the architectural detail is impressive, even for practical objects like door knobs and door knockers.
Newer door knobs on the entries of modern buildings are so shiny I can see myself reflected in the photos — selfies on hardware.
Many door ornaments have intricate designs of oak leaves, wheat, or flowers. The lions are magnificent! Even door hinges can be things of beauty.
I am drawn to the elegant simplicity of round brass door knobs with worn patinas. They glow in the sun. They are especially beautiful on doors painted in shiny primary colors.
Here is a small sampling of the door decorations that delighted me on my Paris walks.
Wouldn’t it be hard to choose from these for your own front door?
