Fanny Packs

Fanny Packs, Botkier Vivi Leather Belt Bag

Fanny packs are back with a vengeance! Now called belt bags, hip bags, bum bags and sometimes fanny packs, they are available in every color and style you can imagine. From inexpensive nylon to designer leathers, you can probably find a fanny pack that you’ll be happy to wear.

While fanny packs have been the brunt of many jokes, they are pretty useful accessories. When we’re carrying bags at the Farmers Market, toting a toddler to the park, dancing at a club or snapping photos on vacation, it’s nice to have two hands (and arms) free.

Everyone in the fashion industry seems to be in on the fanny pack business. You can spend thousands on a Prada leather belt bag or twenty-something dollars on a Herschel polyester belt bag. There are studded belt bags, faux fur belt bags, team logo hip bags and that’s just the beginning of your options.

I still have my original fanny pack in dark green nylon. I use it for walking and running. It holds tissue, my house key, a little cash, my phone and objects I find along my journeys. It’s not attractive, so I’ll only be using it with my workout attire.

Here are several fanny packs that I think are good looking and would work for exercise, travel or an evening out. They range from inexpensive versions to slightly higher cost options. You can click on a photo to go to the seller’s website.

Newer fanny packs have straps long enough that you can carry them over your shoulder, crossbody style or around your waist. Some of the options have convertible straps, so that you can wear them on your waist or carry them over your shoulder. The Botkier Vivi leather belt bag in the post cover photo is one such example. You can switch between the black waist belt and an adjustable chain and leather strap.

Here are some examples of how belt bags can be worn.
