This cheddar cheese sourdough quick bread is delicious and comes together easily. I typically eat a fruit-based bread for my weekend breakfast, but this savory cheese bread is a nice change to my morning repast.
The addition of sourdough starter makes this bread firm and easy to slice. Use sharp cheddar cheese to give the bread a robust cheesy flavor. I like extra sharp cheese for its tang.
Tips
- For variety, try adding chopped chives or poppy seeds to the batter.
- You can make this bread without the sourdough starter. There’s no need to adjust the rest of the recipe.
Ingredients
Here are the ingredients that you need to make a loaf of cheddar cheese sourdough quick bread.
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups extra sharp cheddar cheese, grated
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1/2 cup sourdough starter
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Butter a loaf baking pan.
In a large mixing bowl, add the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Add the grated cheese and stir it into the dry ingredients.
In a smaller bowl, add the egg and whisk it. Add the milk, melted butter and stir. Add the sourdough starter and stir again.
Pour the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients and fold them in with a silicone spatula, until they are just blended.
Spoon the batter into the loaf pan. Bake the bread in the oven until it is lightly browned on top and a cake tester inserted into the loaf comes out clean (about 50 minutes).
Cool the loaf on a wire rack for about 10 minutes. Remove it from the pan and let it cool before slicing it.
