Changing up the classic Manhattan cocktail a bit, these Bitter Southerner cocktails call for Averna instead of sweet vermouth. Averna is a type of Amaro, an Italian bitter. The syrupy liquor has a spicy herbal, sweet flavor with citrus overtones. Thanks to the Averna, these Bitter Southerners are delicious!
I found this recipe in Super Tuscan. Since I have been experimenting with Manhattans recently, I looked forward to trying this variation. It did not disappoint.
The recipe calls for an orange garnish, but I think that you could use Amarena cherries or Luxardo cherries (or cherries and an orange twist).
This recipe makes two cocktails.
Ingredients
- 3 ounces of Averna
- 3 ounces of bourbon
- orange twists to garnish
Instructions
You can serve the cocktail on the rocks or straight up.
Bitter Southerner On The Rocks
Pour the Averna and bourbon into a cocktail pitcher. Stir and pour into two ice-filled glasses. Garnish with orange twists.
Bitter Southerner Straight Up
Pour the Averna and bourbon into an ice-filled cocktail pitcher or a cocktail shaker. Quickly stir or shake and then strain the cocktails into two empty glasses. Garnish with orange twists.
